How Green is ANU?

þ    ANU has established a three million dollar Green Loan Fund that will provide funding for projects that reduce the environmental impact of the university in critical areas like water consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and waste management.

þ    ANU collects food and other organic waste from kitchens and residential dinning halls, restaurants and cafes for processing into nutrient rich compost.  The HotRot organic recycling project can divert up to 1/3 of ANU’s current waste stream to landfill.

þ    ANU currently purchases over 25% of its electricity from accredited green energy sources.

þ    Two out of four sports ovals are watered using recycled grey water, saving an estimated 30 million litres of drinking water per year.  ANU is working towards the goal of eliminating potable water in the landscape.

þ    ANU's Timely Tredlies bike fleet encourages sustainable transport around campus and curbs greenhouse emissions.  One of the largest fleets of its kind in Australia, over sixty bicycles have been distributed along with helmets, saddle bags, lights, and cycle computers.

þ    The ANU Environmental Management Program has won 16 local, regional, national and international awards since its establishment in 1998.  In 2009 ANU won the International Sustainable Campus Network Award for Excellence in Impact.

These are just a few examples demonstrating how ANU is leading the way towards a more sustainable future.  For more information, visit the ANUgreen website, the 2007-08 Annual ANU Environmental Management Report (pdf), or see the short video Sustainability at ANU.
